Most people could do vj and mapping just with blender and resolume. Magic is not a 3d engine, it's kind of a fake but is incredibly fast IMO. In magic you can import videos and also your obj files from blender, which is a bonus but it takes some practice to know what to do with them because you have no control over the normals and you have no control of lights. Things that in resolume you do with one touch, in magic have to build the whole structure.

The bad thing is that you have to build all your structure. The good thing is that you can import shaders. Magic is harder to start with but has better (slightly) effects. Resolume works like a dj mixer, you render your animations in blender, after effects. Resolumes recent envelope system has really upped the game for getting synced visuals but I live in hope that these will come to Magic in V3.0. The thing I really miss from Resolume that doesn't exist in Magic is BPM sync and BPM tap. In Magic you could have 100 nodes (not recommended but you could) in a scene that needs it and it wouldn't affect any other scenes. The layers in Resolume give a lot of freedom to mix'n'match on the fly but can be wasteful if, for one part, you need 10 layers means you have 10 layers for all. Magic has OSC, Midi, NDI and therefore slightly less well connected but I feel I can be more creative there.

Resolume has Ableton Link, SMPT, OSC, Midi, NDI, Black Magic support and so is much more integrated with other systems. Regarding your questions, either would be fine for live performance, live VJing, ease of use. I started out with Resolume and still have it on my system but don't use it at all since moving to Magic Music Visuals.
